macOS has FS encryption, iOS has, Android has… Windows-in-the-edition-most-consumers-have doesn't? The fact that BitLocker isn't in the base Windows edition is surely damning at this point, because it provides an easy way around whatever security work MS does.

I'd argue there's two sides to the thread model for most users: viruses and worms through casual spreading of files over networks/USB devices, and unauthorised access to data by people with physical access (be that family, friends, or others).
