Can you just avoid hardcoding your profile path, and maybe use variables instead? $env:LOCALAPPDATA for example...

When you say "you", do you mean "All of the myriad teams in Office and Windows that presently don't do that?"
-
OK, you need to be more specific about what's broken and what needs fixing. What doesn't work correctly when your profile path has those four extra characters in it?
-
Every cached file path (in config files, scripts, etc) that refers to "C:\users\ericlaw" is broken.
-
Is this an Active Directory domain-joined system? Did it create a temporary profile because of (perhaps) some error loading the user hive or something like that?
-
AAD, and I'd assume it's something like that, although it didn't seem to be "temporary."
-
Check the System event log for profile/hive-loading errors.
-
I don't see any. AFAICT, this happened when Windows installed the latest build while Message Analyzer was open.

Sadly, this works until you try to launch any application (e.g. Outlook) that wrote the .000 path into persistent storage, at which point you get errors.
#sigh -
Storage that is not part of the registry?
-
Either. The .000 suffixed value is sprinkled across dozens or hundreds of registry keys.
-
Well, that’s easy – create a 2nd admin, load the other user’s hive, replace them all, then unload the hive again?
-
"Replace them all" how, specifically?
-
By exporting the entire loaded hive to a .REG file, then using Notepad’s Search and Replace, then reimporting the export? Just an idea.
-
I think it very unlikely that this would work (ACLs, for instance).

Is there also an old defunct profile without the .000? The only time I’ve seen this is when doing a clean(ish) install and migrating over an old profile with a conflicting name. Could also be an upgrade bug...
-
It's an upgrade bug. Computers are awesome because they can make and propagate mistakes at blinding speed.
-
when OneDrive doesn't quiiiiiiite get sync right and you can see every PC you used when that was a bug (those files all have the same name)pic.twitter.com/nohPENDIJR
