Crews found cracking (previously reported) in the blocks used to attach the rails; ST is also replacing all of the inserts used to attach the rails to these blocks because they've been stripped.

Sound Transit has known about some of these issues since 2019 but staff didn't raise them to the board because "the fact is we thought we had solutions to the problems and we were optimistic that they would work," ST deputy CEO Kimberly Farley said, but they did not.
In Federal Way, where the rail line will run along I-5, an effort to stabilize the ground failed and a mudslide pushed a 200-foot embankment nine feet. ST is looking for a fix but "until we determine a solution, we won't be able to identify a new timeframe for this project."
