NEW: a common response to reports of hospitals struggling this winter is "it’s no different to a bad flu season!" I’ve tracked down historical data on flu ICU admissions, including winter 2017-18, a record high. Here’s how England’s Covid winter compares to a bad flu season 📹

The way I read 's "The Joy of X" : read for 3 minutes, sit and think for 5, repeat. How does a photon know its moving along the path of least resistance? How is a photon a wave if they don't experience time? HOW?? 5 minutes up, back to reading.

Have heard that there has been some suggestion that the new variant is 'harder to sequence'. Don't know who this comes from, but it is wrong. We use the protocol and we don't see any issue our data, sequenced using the ARTIC protocol on Illumina.

I’m an RN in El Paso and was recently transferred from the OR to COVID ICU. I resigned from my job last week and I’ve been asked several times, “What was the breaking point?” I don’t know a specific one, but I’ll share this: a thread 🧵1/

  9. Was asked recently in an interview whether given majority of deaths are in over 65s, if this is an ‘acceptable loss’? Couldn’t believe we are even asking this question. Thinking of all the vibrant & inspiring 70 & 80 year olds I know (incl my grandparents).

  13. Fact check: False The fatality rate on this viral tweet is way too high, as the calculation involves the IFR, not the CFR. The real numbers are bad enough. Let’s stick to those.

Unlike most PhDs, I grew up socioeconomically disadvantaged. Neither of my parents went to college . When I was born, the WIC program paid for my formula and food for my mom. When I ate lunch in high school, I paid less than everyone else, while working a part time 1/10

SO aggravated w/ the "underlying conditions" headlines- CDC report actually says 6% of deaths list COVID-19 as the ONLY cause on death certificate. Most common additional causes? influenza/pneumonia, respiratory failure/distress & cardiac arrest.

Reflecting on the Covid era, one of the silver linings is that, the so called idea of “Third World Countries” has begun to evaporate. Seeing some national health responses, and even politics of a “non-Third World” country, I could not see much difference! We’re in the same boat.
