Part three because we’re on a roll. When you think you have finished an edit, start muting the pieces one by one. If you cannot hear it noticeably going away, leave it muted. Often we build up layer by layer assuming every piece is still part of what we are hearing.

But like building a freestanding arch, once the keystone has been added all the foundation can be taken away and the bridge stands. Same in editing. Often the first things you cut, their only true purpose is to get you the last thing you cut. At which point it can be abandoned.

It’s always this way. This is a hard learned lesson and seems counterintuitive. You’ll think ‘well I cut that for some reason’. But be bold and be brutal with your own work. I often erase about half of my work by the time we hit the mix stage.

Really true! Often only after muting something and hearing no real difference do I realize I should cut that. I'd like to be more proactive about this, personally, whether time constraints are quite evident or not. Thanks for sharing!
