It's not just that franchise. I can recite the first chapter of Neuromancer by heart because of all the times I've read it, but I couldn't actually summarize the plot for you.

Plot isn't special or magic. Some people (like me) don't have a mind for plot so stories by themselves aren't engaging or memorable to them. Some legitimately good media survives on the strength of worldbuilding or clever ideas or aesthetics. That's OK.

Even stuff that's considered to have a strong classical plot structure... I couldn't give you a summary of Star Wars or Lord of the Rings that actually accounted for more than 10% of the on-screen events or put them in order. Do people watch them for the plot?

I think a lot of people read/watch LotR for the elvish language & other worldbuilding elements. I think likewise about Star Wars. When does story matter? In shows like The Twilight Zone, where a plot summary really summarizes because there's nothing but a naked twist.

This latter case is also when spoilers start to matter. Is the piece of media just a bunch of valueless fluff around a twist that is better expressed as a single sentence? Then the sentence is the preferable form, & the TV version will be disappointing in comparison.
