A contract can be verbal (avoid!). An email defining terms is enough - a good start Or a formal contract. READ EVERY VERSION, sneaky lawyers change them between drafts, so read, and re-read

Someone wanted to buy an IP off me. The verbal 'contract' promised decent money (for a first IP) and a job. The actual contract gave no money, effectively, and no wage for the job. Verbal contracts are pixie farts.
