Schneier says the next great hope for encryption is OTR. For one thing, young people don't use email anyway, so it is dying.

@zooko but OTR is a mess right now wrt to usability.

@gazoombo @zooko Way less work to fix it than GPG. Agreed, though. Fucking socialist millionaires protocol must die, to start with.

@dymaxion @zooko re: OTR v. GPG, I agree OTR's usability issues easier to tackle, but I wish I could keep OTR keys on a smart card…

@gazoombo @zooko To be frank, that's utterly irrelevant. So far from the problem space we need to be thinking in it's not even funny.

@gazoombo @zooko But if we don't do the real, hard work first, we're lying to ourselves and the entire Internet. And I'm done with that.

@dymaxion @zooko so where do we start? What implementations are worth building on now?

@gazoombo @zooko And getting to usable, not getting to secure, is the hard part.

@dymaxion @zooko Agree. Are there any UX/IX designers helping with this yet? And if not, why not?

.@gazoombo @zooko Basically, there's zero culture of engagement between design and open source - our fields don't know how to work together.

@dymaxion @zooko Yep. @SaltineJustine and @bastilian had a go at changing this with @OpenKarmaDesign. Not sure where that stands now.

@gazoombo @zooko And I'm curious to dig into the new textsecure revision. Cryptocat is still our gold standard for usable, though.

@gazoombo @zooko It's not clear. I'd like to see jitsi and chatsecure become usable; similarly, we have to (like it or not) fix libpurple.
