This all might seem trivial, teaching and education matter to me. I will continue to show up in every capacity, but what I canβt do is sit back and do nothing as people try to discredit our profession. We are doing the absolute best that we can.
The kids, without a doubt, are what keep me in this profession. Back in April, I moved to Elkton, and who helped me move? Who played games in my backyard and ate pizza? My kids. I am, wholeheartedly and proudly, Elkton now.
However, for the last year, I have been harassed, ridiculed on social media, and called in by various leaders because of ONE parent. As I grieved the loss of my mother and fell into such a void while trying to be the best teacher I could be, I have had this looming over me.
Yesterday, I put on my best acting skills as we read a short story. I turned the lights down low, changed my voice, used all kinds of props and music. And the kids? They were hooked. They were readers. They were magic.
I had one of the best teaching days yesterday only for it to ruined at the end because someone wants me fired and continues to try to slander my reputation.
Happy #PDMonday! Today's title, Keeping the Wonder is structured around four key elements that fuel engagementβsurprise, curiosity, freedom, and inspiration and offers practical strategies and abundant inspiration to create fun and compelling lessons. Ask #YourBNRep for more info
This book is amazing!!! I love that it is applicable for teaching high school! An explosion of ideas on how to cultivate curiosity. I love this chart. A great #SAT prep idea.
Q4 A: I'm always looking for inspiration. Whenever I find myself feeling that sense of wonder, I think, "How can I recreate this in my classroom?" Recently, I played in Backyard Olympics, and now I have tons of ideas for games in the classroom! #tlap
Q3 A: I often look at the UDL guidelines for recommendations and ideas for providing more choice in both how students learn and how they demonstrate their learning. #tlap
Q2 A: I love sparking students' curiosity with the first slide on the board. When they walk in, they naturally look to the board area. How can you use that to capitalize on their curiosity? #tlap
Q1 A: To hook your students with surprise, consider using a flashbulb prop (a prop that will likely stick out in their memory even after the lesson!) I love using fake skeleton hands from Dollar Tree; for some reason, the kids ALWAYS want them! :) #tlap

So last week, I started using these skeleton hands as a prop for a spooky story, and now I can't go a single lesson without breaking them out π Today, I started using them to make songs to fill the silence π
When using hashtags, if you capitalize every new word Blind twitter users can actually hear the message you're saying.
So, instead of #blacklivesmatter (which still rocks but is a mm less accessible)
But #BlackLivesMatter allows the message to be accessible!
Even on instagram!
White educators: "I love my students" is no substitute for racial justice, and if we don't educate about and act for racial justice--not just racial "diversity," but racial JUSTICE--we don't, in point of fact, love our students.
Please read happy Black books too. We don't just write about slavery and colonialism. Consume Black history and art about anything. It all helps to decenter whiteness
Now Introducing: What You Don't See, a book written by my students π Some students detail real-life experiences, while others create pieces of short fiction.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but lack of student participation in your digital learning content IS NOT a reflection of your "relationship building" skills as a teacher. And don't make it one
