Most Buddhism today is a form of gaslighting--telling you that what you're experiencing is not real or true, and that your "REAL" problem is something entirely different for which only hardcore Buddhist practice is the only solution.https://twitter.com/PeljorTenzin/status/1113422545657704448 …

This set up makes you a sitting duck for COVERT NARCISSISTS who run most Buddhist organizations--yes, even the hip, cool social justicey ones--because they need self-victimizing codependent people to fill their shrine rooms and donate lots of money.https://youtu.be/16AOOKHyddQ

So here's the deal with 'lama-guru syndrome': they are covert narcissists. And you as the codependent make a Samaya vow to see them as Buddha--because that's what all Narcissists want--someone to venerate them as perfect, benevolent and unassailable.

Maybe there’s a spectrum of toxicity (just as there’s a spectrum of narcissism) with cults clearly being on one end.

Yes, there is a spectrum of narcissism. Dzogchen Ponlop is clearly a narcissist but a benign one. A Productive Narcissist, he doesn't do much harm. OTOH, Sogyal Rinpoche is a Malignant Narcissist, a sadist. He thoroughly enjoys humiliating and inflicting pain on people.
