oh crap i should have specified the alternative like some of you might be answering as "easier or harder than just the original text" and others as "easier or harder than the original text plus a description of what the emoji was intended to mean"

It definitely depends on the context for me. I’m also much better with text based emoji( ^^ or xD for example) than I am with picture based ones(
,
, etc). Not to mention certain devices/apps have their own unique emoji which complicates things even further... -
same, i can do a lot of text based ones okay!

I picked "easier" because I think it's easier to both read and also convey my intentions. Buuut. If I actually look up the name of said smiley it usually says it's a completely different emotion and I can't see it at all. So now I'm just hoping ppl are on the same page.
-
In the Swedish version at least this one isn't named sad or unhappy, but stern or grim. Stern would be a completely different facial expression to me? -
i have no idea what stern would look like!
-
I'm very sensitive to others' negative emotions (and read into them way too much) so to me a stern face to me would look angry. And absolutely not sad which I think this emoji looks like.
-
angry is like, bunched up eyebrows i think?
-
is what I would call angry. But this one's name is cross/moody.
I don't think anyone would read this as moody? -
It's described as pouting face, when I mouse over. I thought pout was an expression that said "please?" in face speak. But that emoji does not look very "please?" to me. :/
-
I... I what. What kind of 9th level of hell pouting is this? I am so confused. Pouting to me is what my 4 yo nibling C does if you tell them that they're not allowed to play in the street because there's traffic. It's more sadness (in a whiny way), not anger?

With emojis i am familiar with, it makes it easier but sometimes i don’t have a clue what some of them mean
<—— like this one, what is it?! -
It's a hug! Apparently. Looks weird.
-
Those hands look more like jazz hands than a hug!pic.twitter.com/67TrZWDnFo
-
Yeah I think I’ve seen someone (
@SnoringDoggo?) say they use that one for flapping! -
Ooh I like that!
-
Yeah I do! I use all these for it

and also that

If I understand the emoji, probably easier. If I don’t understand the emoji, probably harder. If the emoji is substituted for a word, almost certainly harder.

I don't think in pictures (because aphantasia). Instead I think in words. And emojis (and most other pictograms/symbols), if I can't replace it with a word, my sentence parsing goes wonky. I also have no idea what the emoji mean. I use about four or five emoticons instead. :)

In general, easier, but I will often mouse-over an emoji I think I know and find that it means something totally different
[embarrassed emoji].
So maybe I also overestimate how helpful it really is. -
I thought that was the shocked and slightly horrified emoji !?!
-
It very well may be!
