The essay, on Russian poetry, that I shared last week was a companion to this on Afanasy Fet – a poet I rediscovered last year. It's a little long but I’d be delighted and grateful if you’d make some time for it. Thank you for reading #russia #poetry #fethttps://link.medium.com/3KV6uVzQJ3

Many of his poems have been set to music by Tchaikovsky (he called him a musical-poet & found parallels in his genius with Beethoven), Scriabin, Rachmaninov and Rimsy Korsakov. Here is a sample of his poems that have been set to music:

Tchaikovsky on Fet: "Fet, like Beethoven, has been given the power to affect those strings of our soul which are inaccessible to artists...who are limited to words. He is...more of a poet-musician, since he avoids those themes which lend themselves easily to verbal expression.”

Tchaikovsky’s very first composition was for a poem by Afanasy Fet; a poem he set to music, at the age of 16. Here is a recording of that song - ‘My genius, my angel, my friend’https://youtu.be/-MKonHP8gdk
