Our case study guidelines for software engineering just reached 1000 ISI citations, and it's still open access

Then we explored how the model can help to define (and compute) precision and recall for different variants of SZZ, having into account how well they find changes to the code that caused a given set of (later fixed) bugs.

We applied this criteria to a number of bugs in two projects, analyzing its suitability for classifying changes (patches) to source code, according to how they cause (or not) bugs.

With this criteria, we try to decide if a patch really introduced a bug when it was written, or was maybe right at that time, and it was a later change (in requirements, in external APIs, etc.). This leads to the concept of "extrinsic" and "intrinsic" bugs.

In this paper, we study how bugs are introduced, based on information available in development repositories. In particular, we propose a criteria for deciding that some patch introduced a bug: "did the patch cause a bug when it was included in the code base"?
