I think the real explanation might be that Trump tries to distance himself fr people who're being investigated, tho Manafort finds a way around that better than most, as probably does Stone.

It's almost as if even Trump realized that Cohen was too obviously fishy to bring into the WH. The funny thing is that Trump was simple-minded enough, and so used to getting away w/ things, that he thought cutting Cohen loose would throw the stink off him.
