Aside from the fact that this is from Strassel, who's a raving nutjob, consider what the GOP has argued in recent weeks. 1) FBI should have warned Trump that his campaign was infiltrated w/suspected RU CI problems 2) FBI should have done nothing else about themhttps://twitter.com/ChuckRossDC/status/994731844095668224 …

Disagree w/ you about Strassel. Don't necessarily disagree w/ you on inconsistencies in arguments about how FBI should have handled Trump intel. Either way, implications of what this source was up to will be significant. Will test the denials of spying on Trump campaign proper

Chuck, you're not that dumb. You remember that the denial of spying was about SIGINT. Remember that? What she's talking abt is a foreign partner pursuing HUMINT abt suspected spies. See the difference?

I'm not understanding. To be clear, you think SIGINT was NOT pursued but HUMINT was?

Let's take a step back. What would you like the FBI to do when they develop credible concerns that Russia (or some other adversary) is trying to recruit spies in the US?

Investigate of course. The problem is, they didn't go deep enough. They looked at it surface level. "Steele is trustworthy" so all is good. If they ran down and verified each of his leads we would have no issue. But even Comey said, none of this was verified.

So you're saying you'd like FBI to find ways to chase down leads?

Ok so you're basically admitting that they sent Halper is gain intel. Thats fine. The question now is what did he find

Perhaps not personally. Likely a request to MI6. But that seems like what you want to happen, no? Also, given reports, it was NOT based off dossier exclusively, it was about general leads.

Know what didn't happen though? They didn't get George Pap's call records until the next year, after he was out of transition. Thus far only evidence of LE (as opposed to CI) activity while someone was affiliated w/Trump was Flynn.

They could have been unmasking George Pap. Most of his contacts were with foreign nationals.

Oddly, the record doesn't support that.

The record DOESN'T EVEN reflect backdoor searches. FBI had to have gone well out of their way to avoid finding some of what they should have found on Pap months earlier than they did.

So again: my question. Should the entire USG have avoided any CI work to investigate the suspected RU targets sidling up to Trump? You've said they didn't do enough. I agree: they should have gone LE sooner. Do you agree with that?

I think they tried to verify the Dossier and failed but wanted to keep it going. They should have stopped when the Dossier was a dead end
