  Some light googling suggest he has priors with Vance and probably assumed that SDNY wouldn't leak any damaging info about Schneiderman but now that it's out he trying to protect the women.

  good point. Gleason was activated by something to write that letter when he did. but what was motivating him to keep it hidden so long and tell these women to stay quiet? IMO he's admitting to aiding and abetting Schneiderman's behavior by advising them to not go up the chain.
