Why would it be unethical? Analogy: in a tort, lawyers sue everyone remotely possible to ensure that they've covered the universe properly. This might mean in a malpractice suit, a doctor is sued who never examined or treated the patient but whose name might appear in records.

Are those subpoenas to produce documents, or to show up in court on a given day in a specific city that might require travel, or to be ready to show up with further notice? I'd sure consider it an ethical issue if I were required to fly to DC on my own dime to be a smokescreen.

To be fair, Podesta could be caught up in all of this depending on how expansive it gets. The Podesta Group was already named in some charges I believe. Obama's not involved in the slightest. The international consulting is a bipartisan scam though.
