Hi. We the government haven't heard of computers yet, so it is very important you carry this piece of paper with you everywhere. Because if we stop you we will need to see it. And if you don't have the original on you when we stop you we will deport you.

Oh, also, please mail the original to a different state. And if you don't, we will deport you. Remember while doing this to carry the original with you at all times.

Oh and when we deport you you don't have a right to a trial or an attorney, and there have been actual cases where this has led to US citizens being deposited in Mexico or being lost for years in jail without due process.

My guess is your crowd of immigrants has experienced less of what my crowd of immigrants did: every single person was out of status as one point. And my crowd of immigrants STILL is way privileged.

My case is super privileged, but the stories I hear from folks dealing with asylee cases are actual nightmare fuel.

Yeah, my immigrant crowd is way more privileged than asylees. But even among that privileged crowd, every single person fell out of status at some point. All the advanced degrees in the world couldn't prevent it.
