Let me get this straight: Instead of using an opportunity to absolutely hammer Trump for his highly unethical and potentially criminal conduct as described by the former FBI Director, Dems want to relitigate 2016 election decisions? Brilliant strategy, guys.

Comey's description of Trump's behavior is absolutely chilling to anyone who cares about independent law enforcement. It goes to the heart of his threats against Rosenstein and Mueller and even Sessions. It is a clarion call to action.

There is nothing—absolutely nothing—anyone can do to change the decisions that preceded the election. Agree, disagree, whatever. It doesn't matter. We can fight about it until the damn cows come home or we can focus on the President's ongoing assault on the rule of law.

Nothing has made me more pessimistic about the midterms than the past 4 days. Are we just congenitally incapable of focusing on what actually matters?

I think Susan has just made a stellar argument about why the timing and self-righteousness of the book are ill-timed and unfortunate.

I met Comey briefly exactly one time years ago, so "friend" seems like a stretch. To Marcy's point, I go back and forth on this. On one hand, I do think the timing risks being counterproductive and damaging.. (1/2)

On the other hand, his descriptions of his encounters with Trump hit on exactly the themes we are seeing repeating in the current WH/DOJ dynamic at this precise moment and offer an illustration of why it is so damaging.

Some of them. Others hit on moralism. While that might affect politics (and therefore impeachment), I'd rather such a public figure not mix legal and moral attacks.

He already doesn't suffer any consequences for his probably illegal acts. Republicans won't impeach for that. I think it will have to be both moral failings the base can't deny and serious crimes to make Republicans vote for impeachment.

Great. Let's have the million Republicans who don't have a legal voice make the moral case, and one of the few Republicans who does have a legal voice make the legal case.

Worth noting that in the Stephanapolous interview he rejected impeachment, presumably either on moral or legal grounds. He advocated for political response through the exercise of individual civic responsibility at the ballot box.
