The irony is that he is being paid to be a "spokesman". Must be a plum gig, I would take the check to just say "no comment" all day. Easiest spokesgig ever!
I'm sure he spends a great deal of time tracking coverage to see what witnesses are saying and whether something really inaccurate and derogatory to a suspect (as this was) is being reported.

He also has to stay on top of developments in the investigation. Plus, in the event that some journalists developed information that Mueller didn’t already have, unlikely though that may be, Carr would be the conduit to investigators.
