And he can't pardon Cohen because he is being charged by the state.

He isn't. Yet.

Good point.

What if Manafort’s case takes so long Trump is no longer in office after he’s convicted?
-
It's like Ford with Nixon, Bush with Weinberger, and now Trump with Libby: "just wait for the NEXT Republican President" is the message being sent. It's true, too!

To minimize the importance of lying to the FBI. Reinforce to the base that it's no big deal. Plant the seed should he ever need to be pardoned for obstruction.

Why can’t he pardon then pardon their contempt when they refuse to testify. Wasn’t sherif joe contempt and he pardoned.
-
ya; at some point there's going to be a Constitutional challenge to the unlimited nature of the pardon. The president CAN'T be able to tell a state agent, "Violate that person's rights" and then just pardon them -- takes away rights & invalidates the court's authority
-
but until then, you're right. Trump's agents are effectively immune to the law (except for due process; they can still he held, tried and convicted, they just can't be punished)
-
ultimately, the Bill of Rights will supersede the unlimited grant of power in Article II, but don't get in an argument with a lawyer about that (yet) ;)

yeah the Ford blanket pardon of Nixon raised a ton of questions that no one ever bothered to answer, like for example, could he even do that?

Didn't Ford issue an unconditional pardon for Nixon? Nixon wasn't convicted prior to that pardon.
-
agree, but no one ever tested that, Nixon was out, they just let it slide

Why not pardon for charges Mueller would use as leverage?

i have no reason to believe that trump feels he needs to follow the law. i've not seen much reason to feel that his party will do much to stop him. i'd like to believe that things will work out but i never thought we'd be here.

He can commute sentences. Can only be sentenced upon conviction.

Also, a defendant would have to go through the expense of a trial and also gamble that Trump is still in office. And do you really want a trip to Rikers or Attica from a state court conviction?

Your assuming he can't pardon himself. If he can, then there will be no (Federal) _criminal_ case in which they can be forced to testify.

Sad that he can’t give “get out of jail” card to everyone!
