The NYTs Red Line is a plot device. Like putting a bomb under a dinner table in an otherwise boring scene. It adds tension.
This too easily excuses NYT for their role in reinforcing The Red Line (and doesn't note that virtually everyone else, including this piece, misreports what it is). Thank you. That article puts to words why it’s been gnawing at me about that reporter shouting “Why don’t you just fire the guy?” And trump nonchalantly answering without the realization he’s being goaded.

No. Trump refused to release his tax returns. Everyone knew his excuse was bs. He piled mountains of fake files to show he was signing over control of his business to his sons. Again bs. Overstated his networth. He does not want anyone scrutinizing his money an how gets it.
