Thank you--I saw that before I crashed on getting home. I think that might be it, except that Irish passports DID work in CDG exit machines last year, did not over the weekend.

Typical passport validity in EU is 10 years (I believe), nearly all Schengen citizens will have fingerprints in their passport now - so maybe they changed criteria on machines on 1st Jan?

Interestingly, the person to person review was probably far less intrusive than the machines. Just took longer.
