My takes have a lot more to do with how he gets credit for opposing torture and illegal wiretapping but not really.
In short. He's not bad. He has been an important (though usually inefficacious) check on abuse of power. But he's got a really inflated sense of his own righteousness.

He also gets credited for diversifying the FBI, when diversity went down each year for black and Latino agents while he was director. Rate of women in management went way down too. He talked a good game tho.
