My understanding (from Marty and others) is that Pruitt or another PAS acting AG would have power to fire Mueller. There is some dispute over whether he would (versus going down the succession line), but presumed OLC would say yes.

Pruitt is said to have great ambitions to be AG and perhaps beyond. Getting in the middle of such a mess would not necessarily serve those ambitions.
