I suspect, more than expecting this will get the charges thrown out (esp since Manafort is, by his own decision, fighting charges in two districts), he's trying to get Mueller to lay out The Other Shit that's coming down the pike, which Mueller has deferred.

I don't think it's grasping. It buys time. It is a way to collect information. I don't even think that requires assuming assassination his biggest worry. News reports are that Trump may move to bring in Pruitt to fire Mueller. Can you blame him for delaying?
