It is possible that 1) letting Nunberg melt down on TV in amusing fashion is not why the public hates the media 2) yesterday's circus went well beyond the definition of newsworthy.
-
-
Problem is Media concentrates coverage on single lead story to exclusion of other information. Nunberg wouldn't stop talking & he was part of Trump campaign from beginning, so newsworthy. Mayer NewYorker story that Trump's choice for SOS was influenced by Russia is EXPLOSIVE.
-
Except maybe not true. ALL of the evidence we have about Trump's relationship w/Mitt says it's more likely someone in RU was trying to claim credit for something.
-
Where did idea of Tillerson as SOS come from? He stated he didn't want the job & it's financial loss for him. The State Dept has now been gutted, which is ideal for Putin. Trump trash talks NATO & won't implement sanctions. Romney was logical choice. Tillerson's bizarre choice.
-
From former SoS Condi Rice and former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, both very much institutionalists who nevertheless love the oil industry more.
-
They endorsed Tillerson, but don't recall they chose him. Tillerson's connection to Russia/Putin, "friend" medal" & projects suspect. Exxon recently abandoned Russia projects Tillerson started. Putin just announced new nuclear missile delivery capability, with NO USA response.
-
Zero experience or desire to be a diplomat was odd choice. Even if Gates & Rice liked him. At this point, no one else likely wants the job & maybe Tillerson has learned something. At least today Trump is talking negotiations with NK versus undermining Tillerson.

And cover. That Jane Meyer piece in the New Yorker was a doozy.
-
Well, I disagree about that. https://www.emptywheel.net/2018/03/05/15-months-and-15000-words-later-boosters-still-obscure-the-timeline-on-the-steele-dossier/ … But there were other things worth covering, or even other ways to cover Nunberg's meltdown.
-
Isn't the story that
#Nunberg did 5/1/2 hour interview then gets called before Grand Jury? So he's got evidence#Mueller team wants in record asap The fact he's mad/scared abt this? Don't work for@realDonaldTrump if getting caught bums you out, 36 yr old atty#MoreIndictments -
I agree that Nunberg's GJ testimony -- and his grant of immunity, if indeed he was really granted it -- is newsworthy. But those details, and the possible explanation behind it, barely make the coverage.

The Press lets Trump melt down periodically on TV and now it is not OK when one of his henchmen does it? Pure crap.
-
Congratulations. You've just supported my point but apparently don't understand that.
-
Not exactly. What I meant is that it is OK to interview a person who is central to an important issue, even if they decide to drink or if they are mentally ill. I think you were pointing out that doing it has poor outcomes?

It was a Stone inspired stunt.https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2018/03/nunberg-interview/554921/ …
-
Even if we had evidence it was one way or another, does that impact the Mueller investigation at all?
-
Of course not. But the car crash gawping at him spinning out could be abandoned.

I'm confused. What is the problem here? That the media got newsworthy interviews? That they pressed him for information? That they didn't play attorney for him and advise him to not be so fucking stupid?
-
The problem is that our media is more interested in sexy TV than news.
-
I mean that's obviously true. I'm just wondering what that means in practice for what was wrong with yesterday? The interviews were wacky but definitely on topic and definitely relevant. Getting him to admit Trump is probably guilty is a pretty big deal.
