that's Zizek's argument. It's a big risk to take but if that does happen, well, there is a sliver lining especially if we can get organized for long enough to substantially change those things!

[Grumble grumble self-censors what she's thinking about Zizek.]
-
heh, I take a piecemeal approach to Z. I like a limited set of what he says even if I discount a lot. But that was one of his core arguments back in the day, that's all and there is some kernel of truth/power there.
-
Yeah, it's personal for me. I studied with him and he volunteered to be on my diss committee (I did not take him up on that).
-
I was just cleaning out my bookshelves and found an old Zizek book and the first thought that came to my mind was "I wonder what he would have thought about
@emptywheel's dissertation?" -
The meeting at which he asked to be on the committee I pointed out a theorist he had made us read had his history wrong, basically to support the theory. He said it didn't matter, the theory was all that mattered. But boy did he think my diss topic was sexy.
-
Some months later an equally illustrious scholar in my field heard my topic, also thought it was sexy, looked at my boobs, turned to a guy next to him whose school was hiring, and said, "hire her."

For fucks sake and yet not surprising

Question: Is the success of
#metoo
and changing attitudes about sexual harassment due to the trump effect? If so, that’s 2 good things. -
Probably significantly, yes. But thus far, with some notable exceptions (NPR is one), I'm not sure these predators are being replaced by women.
-
Must they be replaced by women for it to be a good thing? I’m a woman. I think the important thing here is ethics rather than gender.
-
Not "must." But the imbalance in gender makes repeated problems more likely. Ending that imbalance needs to be part of the solution, but it is just one part.
-
Yes. Thanks.

I’ve had many private discussions about that. While I’m not happy about the real suffering his admin has caused, it could serve as a real wake up call for most of America.
-
It needs to be sustainable. But the best signs so far are in local elections and the new leaders coming up in various movements (not least these Parkland kids).
-
Absolutely. If it were simply reflected in national polls, but not on the ground, I’d say we are doomed. But the wave is building from the municipal level up, which is how real change is done.

Its
@TheRickWilson Let's hope it applies to the@NRA#ETTD -
you might, i won't; let's hope it applies to ICE for a start ;)
-
I think it needs to be broader than ICE. It needs to be a reaffirmation that we're a nation of immigrants.
