Maybe a dumb question, but if the Gates/Manafort indictments do not directly implicate Trump, wouldn’t funding their defense and/or a pardon at the very least create the appearance of involvement?

Not sure Gates would have opted for lengthy prison sentence over flipping even with funds to pay lawyers. Likely would have delayed flipping, not prevent it. Though he did lie to shield Manafort even last minute, so who knows.
