Mueller may well have used great forensics as part of his investigation (thus the addition of Ryan Dickey to the team). But he's not showing them and won't ever have to here.

Pineda's role seems central here, no?
His information doesn't talk about how he was paid. But that could be part of it too.
I mean he facilitated the payments to others by helping to establish bank accounts under the names of stolen identities. Maybe forensics led Mueller to Pineda, but Pineda has the receipts.
So they were paying someone who preferred payment in cryptocurrencies. 
Not a lawyer, but I'd need a very stiff drink before contemplating explaining crypto currencies to a jury, on top of the presumably labyrinthine financial maneuvering Manafort et alia presumably engaged in.
Nor should he.
