It's like 2002 all over again: our media stars are decreeing that it is the duty of every patriotic citizen to maintain at the forefront of our minds the question of how we will "punish Russia." Please, Chuck, enlighten us: what should the US do, specifically, to "punish Russia"?https://twitter.com/chucktodd/status/964619011005788160 …

We promote democracy in Russia? I respect you, but it’s hard to believe that anybody would seriously believe that “democracy promotion” was anything but a cynical veil.
-
There are those that promote democracy for those cynical reasons and those who do so because they believe in it and those receiving the aid who believe it really important.
-
And if the US powerful believed it was important, why do they only promote democracy with our geopolitical rivals?
-
One might ask if the best response to the election hack would be to do some democracy promotion here.
-
Yes, exactly I’ll go out on a limb and say that voter suppression had a far greater effect than 13 Facebook trolls.
-
As I've said repeatedly. And GOP trolling was far better funded and far more effectively implemented than the IRA stuff.

It's a good question, but I don't think the West can allow possible Putin reactions to guide our policy on this one.
-
Isn't the first end goal to prevent this from happening again? If so, how is more economic isolation (that it's not clear we can sustain, particularly as Trump refuses any global leadership role) going to do that?

And how do we add in retaliation for the Shadow Brokers/Vault 7 leaks and NotPetya exploitation of NSA exploits, without escalating our way to major war?

Brazilian Glenn should be ignored. It's not 2002 for him anymore, either.
-
I'm responding to Steven, not Glenn, because I think the Q of how to respond when, in Putin's mind, 2016 WAS a response to what he considers similar tampering.
-
Well it's a general statement. GG thrives (and enjoys) when he succeeds getting everyone riled up. Not saying your point is wrong but none of these things will be solved on his timeline.

US attempts at 'cultivating' democracy anywhere are infinity-times worse than anything Russia could try. It is a bloodthirsty hegemon, responsible for the destruction of Iraq, resurgence of slavery in Libya, genocide in Yemen (& that's just in this century!). Laughable that +

"Democracy promotion"? More like regime change everywhere, including Russia, U.S. doesn't already control. U.S. regime change in Ukraine, Syria, Honduras, Libya, Iraq, etc. haven't been about promoting democracy. Surely you know that?
