      Glenn Greenwald Retweeted Mark Cuban

Billionaires like this are able to express their political views freely without fear of repercussions. But many people are not. The ability to speak anonymously/ pseudonymously has long been crucial to the safety of many people or important arguments (see the Federalist Papers)https://twitter.com/mcuban/status/957686987229618176 …

It's time for @twitter to confirm a real name and real person behind every account, and for @facebook to to get far more stringent on the same. I don't care what the user name is. But there needs to be a single human behind every individual account .

Also, if we want to stomp out anonymous speech so much, why doesn't that apply to powerful people in Washington and in finance, who constantly disseminate information to the public while hiding behind media-granted anonymity? Why is it only menacing when powerless people do this?

The reporters who grant anonymity are NOT anonymous themselves. I am open to the idea that actual anonymity may have value, but named reporters relying on anonymous sources vs. wholly anonymous = not directly comparable.

I assume you've never seen what a d-order to Twitter will turn over? Twitter is not truly anonymous either.

The worries about bots are not about theoretically perfect anonymity, but de facto. I 100% believe that bots and fake traffic can influence editorial decisions. Think about the amount of free air time Trump recieved July 2015-Jan 2016 -- possible any of that related to artifice?

I'm going to defer this conversation. But when I return to it I will 100% defend the case that treating bots differently than anon human sources is naive.

I'm constantly locked for automated behavior. They can't figure out who's a bot.
