One thing I note in this post on latest Carter Page FISA story: Nothing Mueller has done to date appears to be fruit of Steele dossier. Not even for Manafort. https://www.emptywheel.net/2018/01/29/carter-page-did-not-need-to-be-a-spy-to-be-targeted-under-fisa/ …

That’s kind of irrelevant if it was used to justify surveillance.

I'm sure you, of all people, know how often whackjob consultants get to feed FISA on the way in AND testify in court on the way out for Muslim defendants. Did you complain then?

Well we never knew before, now did we. And in any case it’s a violation of civil rights and needs to stop. Period. You can’t just make things up to justify spying on American citizens, or base an entire investigation on madenip things. Just no.

Sure we did. Defense attorneys raise it all the time and I've heard it from former LE. This is not about "making stuff up." It's about the standards for privatized intelligence, which on CT side are far worse than Christopher Steele. At least Steele speaks Russian.

Well it helped when he got his information from...Russians... It’s fascinating to me that hatred for Trump has made people absolutely support this terrible behavior. It’s shameful.

Surely you're not suggesting I support the way the dossier was used? https://www.emptywheel.net/2017/10/25/democrats-continue-to-score-massive-own-goals-with-steele-dossier/ …

Yeah. I absolutely am. It doesn’t matter what you wrote on your blog. You’re defending it right now. That kinda makes you hypocritical.

No. I'm saying people who ONLY NOW have discovered problems with how FISA launders dodgy intel are obviously 1) ignorant and/or 2) partisan opportunists.

An entire narrative swept the country over a fictional dossier. Americans were spied on. It was used by an admin to target people, politically. People need to go to prison over this.

You're arguing that a good faith belief, based on far more than the dossier, that Russians are recruiting people is political? Your worries about foreign recruiting turn off during elections?

No I never actually had hysterics over it in the first place. Welcome to reality. It’s been going on since politics were invented. I’m much more concerned with the weaponization of our IC and LE for politics. That’s a big problem.

No. You're concerned that bc some of the people Trump employed were of pre-existing (by years!) CI interest, the subsequent investigation affected those same people post-campaign.

Well, you're misportraying what actually happened. I'm more fact-checking you than telling you what you're concerned about. Perhaps you're concerned bc you misunderstand dates? Or love foreign spies? I don't know why you're concerned.

I’m fascinated with how sure you are that you’re correct. What will you do if you’re not? Because the facts aren’t actually known yet. Will you still stubbornly insist you’re right?

Laugh as much as you like but if the dossier was used to justify mall of this, and it appears it was, none of this is valid and it’s all been a waste of time.

Um. Why is DOJ panicking about the response of our foreign partners and other IC components if the dossier justified "all" of this? That's a laughable claim.

You seem to laugh a lot without any reason. Weird. If they’re panicking about that, there must be a pretty damn good reason to panic.
