Just how 3rd-rate & amateurish is NSA's IT staff? Deleted backups subject to a court preservation order. Have they no clue? Yes, a rhetorical question.

"Backup" probably doesn't mean to them what u think. Data is widely sharded. The same bits are in 50 different systems in different buildings, then assembled as required. Redundant & fault tolerant like nrml backup, but w/o a disk you can go to and say "there's the backup file!"

@emptywheel 1. Could be, but I'm skeptical. First & foremost, one would have to understand that NSA was under specific Federal court order to maintain intercepted Internet data. NSA General Counsel's office would've made it clear to NSA IT tech.1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes -

2, Secondly, after NSA GC explains court order, NSA IT Techs' duty was to explicitly provide the data to the NSA GC's office. So somebody in NSA IT royally screed the pooch by only giving NSA GC the metadata.

3. Screwed, not screed. :-) Anyways, how did NSA IT Techs verify that they were providing exactly what the NSA GC wanted? Apparently they did no verification at all because metadata isn't the contents of the intercepts.

4. Thirdly, how did the NSA GC Office validate that the NSA IT Techs had turned over the proper tapes? Apparently that didn't occur either. Seems like the NSA GC Office simply took the word of the NSA IT Techs that they had done it right.

Remember, this is the same NSA GC office that did 25 spot checks of PRTT data and never once found that every single record ingested violated the rules.
