sorta feels like there needs to be more reporting from Cheney's interviews about how he, Bush and Rumsfeld cleanly bounced from Nixon-Ford Administration meltdown into Iran-Contra. seems he has spelled it out more and morehttps://twitter.com/SulomeAnderson/status/953063404306132992 …

Sulome AndersonVerified account @SulomeAndersonI like inspirational films about journalistic victories with lasting impact. But I’d also appreciate a realistic portrayal of how we ended up in a place where reporting on the American government breaking its own laws doesn’t have consequences for the people breaking them.Show this thread2 replies 1 retweet 2 likesShow this thread -
Replying to @daviottenheimer
@SulomeAnderson IIRC@charlie_savage dug up a doc where Cheney commented on that.2 replies 2 retweets 2 likes -
cool. i found some in zelikow et al interview where also says his lesson under Nixon was to keep no records. hoping he changes his mind. maybe it's too late. curious how he knew Stroock (Bush classmate), why they recruited him, what he was kicked out for...pic.twitter.com/WjphR9uYYo

I hated how in his autobiographical novel the greatest bureaucratic genius of the last half century included maybe just one tip on how he worked (parking Terry O'Donnell outside Ford's office to gate-keep, basically).

Sorry, thought you were tweeting that at me. I'll just awkwardly exit then. Sounds interesting though

Yes.... my first book, "Takeover," maps out Cheney's intellectual history and roots of his agenda

I was thinking of a particular doc you had FOIAed where he had talked about how to avoid Iran Contra problems.

Maybe undelivered 1989 AEI speech articulating sweeping view of preclusive exec power in nat-sec/forn-affairs (under which Iran-Contra wasn't a legit scandal because Boland amendment unconstitutional), foreshadowing violating FISA, torture laws after 9/11https://www.charliesavage.com/?p=811
