So basically Vikes won bc Diggs had the presence of mind to ignore what he had been drilled -- to run out of bounds -- and got away with it?

If I read the screen right, he caught it with :04 left. going out of bounds is ONLY something you'd do if that defender was hanging on and he couldn't get free....

Nope. You gotta go out of bounds to leave time for the FG.

don’t get me wrong - every one of us was screaming at him to get out of bounds. going bold doesn’t usually work for the Vikings. Then again, neither do last second field goals.

And the Saints lost 'cause the DB likely took his coach's advice, to avoid PI penalty, a little too seriously.

Wouldn't any tackle that was plausible and immediate have also knocked him out of bounds with time remaining?

He saw the safety hit the corner covering him. When he looked upfield, there was no one to force him out. Knowing no one could catch him, he ran it in

Some rules are normative and some are prescriptive. Diggs treated as normative the exhortation to catch the ball and step out of bounds ASAP.

They're not drilled to run out of bounds when nobody is there to tackle them.

nah, they would've hit the FG if he had done that, still 4 or 3 seconds as he would've stepped out

You don't know that. A near 50 yard field goal with everything on the line. He missed from that same distance at the end of the first half. After the catch he had clear sailing, I could've scored from there and I'm 65 😃😃👍

he was at the 25 yard line with 3 seconds left. Would've been 38-40 yarder at most.
