Wagging the word "target" around does not change fact that 702 is used to obtain access, w/o a warrant, to US person comms, w/o even suspicion of wrong-doing. Moreover, 702 is used to knowingly collect on entirely domestic comms under the 2014 exception.https://twitter.com/AshaRangappa_/status/952383097038888960 …

Again, this is not true. Section 702 does *not* authorized ANY US person being targeted, either in the US or abroad. it also prohibits "reverse targeting," which is using 702 to get at a USPER. In addition, the universe of collection by NSA is NOT THE SAME as what the FBI has. https://twitter.com/FaizaPatelBCJ/status/952382549128630273 …

As @JameelJaffer has endlessly pointed out, advocates of 702 not only admitted in 2008 that it would enable large amounts of warantless surveillance of Americans, they admitted that was a *primary* purpose of the law @asharangappa https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/jun/19/fisa-court-oversight-process-secrecy …pic.twitter.com/Oo0GnlIcYj

I really love that you and @emptywheel are continuing to hammer the useful idiots on this issue but I think I've lost hope of it ever changing for the better. We crossed a Rubicon after 9/11 into ubiquitous, constant surveillance of everyone and I can't see how we ever go back.

It IS worthwhile to lay out precisely what people are voting for. The Tor exception, the unreviewable AG authority, the back door searches. When the way those are used to impact select populations, we'll need to know who to blame for knowingly authorizing it all.

Oh, very true. You'll have to excuse my cynicism, and you're right, any meaningful change only comes when people like you cast a harsh light on what is going on, so I salute all of you for doing at least that. History will judge those who helped the surveillance state harshly.

Good thing our last president was #BLACK, which of course absolves him of all wrong doing (Its not like he explicitly requested American citizens be eligible for indefinite detention or anything).

Yeah when I get the "do you have three heads?" look from a mainstream Dem it's usually either when I bring something like this or his looking the other way at financial crimes by large banks up. Obama was a corporatist centrist wet dream.
