The DNC emails were damaging because they revealed scummy embarrassing behavior by Democratic leadership, so maybe the solution is to not act like a bunch of scumbags. It's been said that character is how you act when you think no one is looking. Voters grasp that viscerally.

I see nothing wrong with that strategy. The unforeseen part was
#CNN and others effectively being a part of the Trump team, elevating him with start to finish coverage of his rallies. It conferred legitimacy to ppl who pay very little attention to politics. -
It probably sounded VERY smart at the time. But as Rand's Dad has explained before in another context, "blowback" sometimes happens.
