I have trouble accepting a description of Cheney as an "experienced sober politician". He's a cold-hearted, self-absorbed opportunistic demagogue, "experienced" in back-stabbing (& front-shooting), maybe sober, but rabidly partisan hack, to whom honesty is a situational decision.
Like you said, an experienced politician. He also is, IMO, the best master of DC bureaucracy in recent memory, which is one reason he was so dangerous.

He's a viper, w/ a reptile's skill at identifying prey & striking w/ little or no warning. The fear he caused by his cold-blooded willingness to "kill", gave him power over the weak, ie, "prey". However, reptiles will never rule the Earth. Ppl just have to get over their fear.
