I have trouble accepting a description of Cheney as an "experienced sober politician". He's a cold-hearted, self-absorbed opportunistic demagogue, "experienced" in back-stabbing (& front-shooting), maybe sober, but rabidly partisan hack, to whom honesty is a situational decision.

Like you said, an experienced politician. He also is, IMO, the best master of DC bureaucracy in recent memory, which is one reason he was so dangerous.
-
all true, but deranged; picture of his paranoid cowering in early pages of
@JaneMayerNYer "The Dark Side" is frighteningly Strangelovian -
He's a perfect real-life counterpart for Major T. J. "King" Kong, riding that H-Bomb onto the target.

lets cut the difference and get a politician turned talk show host, bring on Jerry Springer! (too bad he was born in UK)

Ditto Jennifer Granholm and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

It is a different kind of damage though at least.

Nonsense. Cheney paved the way for Trump.
-
Yes of course but the order is meaningful. ie Cheney : laws :: Trump : institutions

If you describe Oprah as "the richest and most successful self-made woman in history" not to mention "dazzlingly inspirational public figure" rather than just "celebrity" the equations change somewhat.
-
We don't know enough yet to say whether she'd be a good candidate. But dismissing her as just a celebrity does her a grave injustice. She is a bona fide business mogul with real substantial accomplishments other than fame. She would eat Trump's lunch.

Many would consider Mike Pence an experienced sober politician. He's an evil person who should never be president.

I'd exchange or amend devious to "sober" describing Cheney.

Oprah as a candidate? I'm unconvinced. We need candidates w/ Oprah's heart, Tom Hank's charisma, Natalie Portman's winsome appeal, Stephen Hawking's intellect, Meryl Streep's ability to adopt any persona, Robin William's gift for riffing on any topic, Mother Teresa's patience.
