Following up, since you've gone silent. That's the option: use NO traffic obscuring tools, using those that are REALLY tough for average user, use those that NSA might get if they really want it & if you're breaking the law, or use VPNs which FBI can get far more easily.
I haven't "gone silent." I have other pressing issues to follow. Bottom line for me: If a highly read publication is going to promote a system that might have a hole in it, it should inform its readers of that hole. Period. That would be responsible journalism Over & out.
Again, you are mistaking a legal application that is used by the NSA with BOTH VPNs and Tor for a technical hole that isn't in evidence.
But for non technical users, they can use VPNs (many of which are shit, few open source) or they can use Tor. The FBI still has a much harder time with Tor for structural reasons.
