So did TI consider you a "blogger" when bringing you on-board in 2014?

Actually worse. They referred a researcher or something. They refused to use the word journalist with me.
-
Or maybe they used the word analyst. I don't remember. It was a sordid affair all around.
-
Here it is: "Senior Policy Analyst." https://web.archive.org/web/20140210072001/https://firstlook.org/theintercept/about …

I appreciate many things about the Intercept, but this has such a wash of old school sexism. Where were your peers, the 'good guys' when all this was happening?? Thank you for all your work + for sharing this w us now
-
It was more old school snobbery about "journalism" from Cook.
-
Not sure Cook of all people has a leg to stand on re: old school journalism
-
Actually he prolly just didn't like me or my confidence that I had something the Intercept needed.
-
Maybe you don't know the answer to this, but since it seems that
@ggreenwald knows you're the best at what you do (as do I), I can't understand why he didn't 'go to bat' for you and override@johnjcook

Risen never mentions Jeffrey Sterling and no reporter asks him.
@jeremyscahill didn’t bring it up in today’s Podcast. Meanwhile Jeffrey sits in prison. -
Risen mentioned it in his piece. Just not this precedent. https://www.emptywheel.net/2017/06/22/in-opinion-mostly-rejecting-jeffrey-sterling-appeal-fourth-circuit-criminalizes-unclassified-tips/ …

Thank you Marcy. I had sent your piece to Holly Sterling when you published it. Jeffrey is released from CO prison on 1/16. He’s in a halfway house in STL near Holly til June. I hope we can bring more awareness for him. Risen can’t talk about JS.

I’ve come to find out the blogger/journalist distinction is more common than publications allow, in terms of pay and such. Seen it a number of times!
-
Yeah. It gets further exacerbated bc I am document focused. People like to invent a slew of words to describe what I do, in part so they can steal my work.
-
...which makes you much preferable to 'source-focused' approaches that just led us into "we can't actually reveal the documents we have to protect our agreement with our source" nonsense

So this sure does make it sound like the Snowden docs have been privatized by a media company. Do you feel that way at all?
-
No. Access to docs now is very different than it was in 2014.
