It also seems highly likely that some of Papadopoulos' comms were via text that may have gotten destroyed when he got rid of his phone on February 23. So that may be why we don't have the smoking gun in form of email.

I think that's unlikely. Its possible some stuff managed to get swept under the rug, but there's so many instances of shady deals and shady meetings and so much spying that it seems unlikely. hell there's been 100 stories worthy of a "smoking gun" in any other Presidency.
