In the story, we refer to persona Alice Donovan’s Feb. 26, 2016 email. We then say she was being tracked as part of a “months-long” FBI investigation. As far as we can tell, the bureau started reporting on the personas (not Alice in particular) around October 2015.

Where is any timing tied to the "was tracking"? With stored comms it could be any time... This is an editorial issue, not your fault. But no. It was never specified in that article. Date of report might help that.

I get why you don't want to publish the report. But there's a lot of details ABOUT IT which could (should?) be published w/o endangering sources and methods.
