You know, I think @mikeallen deserves a shout out. After months of wallowing in irrelevance with his new outlet, by serving as the credulous shill for the weekend's email attack on Mueller he's a mover-and-shaker again.
Good going Mike!

I mean, consider: If ONLY Fox News had robotically repeated what was obviously a bullshit smear, it would be treated with far more skepticism from the middle news crowd. Mike Allen apparently still has enough credibility, though, he was able to lend it some seriousness.

I don't know. Allen's scoop made no mention of letters to Congress, iirc. It only included the parts about Mueller having obtained the PTT emails, which seemed to me like a bad story for Trump & Co.

I thought that was an attempt to make his "SCOOP" more special.

That's the part I don't get though. Mueller secretly obtaining the emails seems bad for Trump, so why advertise it? Tho explanation could be a.) it was to pre-empt something else, b.) they're bad at PR, c.) trying to rev up pro-Trump media (which hasn't really worked)

That's what I attempt to lay out here: https://www.emptywheel.net/2017/12/18/why-republicans-launched-the-gsa-email-attack-now/ … Tho I'll add that they may have had notice that Trump was withholding stuff (eg fr GPap, Spicer, Bannon, or Priebus) in August.
