How bad was it last times dems had control? My feeling is recent committee work emblematic of GOP inability to competently govern.

I agree that Nunes is worse than anyone in recent memory. But it is easily hijacked and not adequately staffed.

Great, I just went down the California 22nd electoral rabbit hole to see if there's any chance Cooke could be wrong on rating Nunes' seat R+8. GOP presidential results were Trump by 10 pts. But that's the smallest margin since Bush v. Gore.

I say THIS a lot: Won't work. It's not a HPSCI problem; it's a House problem. And history suggests it's immutable. Put another way: Show me a House investigation of this sort (ie, independent of the Senate & DOJ) that wasn't a "shitshow".https://twitter.com/emptywheel/status/941691093397266432 …

Sure. But my goals are fairly modest. You know--the expectation that the MoCs know 1/5 as much abt FISA as I do?
-
If Members on HPSCI know 1/5th as much as you do abt FISA… and 1/5 as much as pro staff does re every big issue that's before committees on which they sit… 1/20 (?) as much as pro staff re every other issue on which they vote…

So if Trump fires Mueller, which seems likely over Christmas, what are the next steps? Do the committees just cease investigating? Sort of wondering how the institutional process would play out. And what recourse those fighting it would have?
