Masha Gessen, as always, is a must-read, but this passage is particularly challenging. https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2017/11/a-mafia-state-within-a-totalitarian-society/546848/ …pic.twitter.com/Vl5WX8DUt5

By "challenging" I meant "something that will challenge what a lot of Americans think." I'm not so much not a fan of sovereignty, but I do recognize that America really isn't.

I'll go for this quote. Perhaps less challenging in your eyes, but largely absent from the discourse at any level--so too challenging for the gatekeepers.pic.twitter.com/ZnYsrEU1Yt

Admittedly the whole thing is pretty damn good. But she gets away with saying that bc she's Russian.

There’s a difference btw handing out leaflets and stealing people’s emails

And both RU and the US have done both.

We should oppose it whenever it happens, regardless of who does it. But, of course, we should support the right to hand out leaflets. Hence, Gessen's comparison is ridiculous.

National sovereignty is vanishing, so I don't much disagree. If sovereignty is to be found it's with metanational capital which steers governments and is not bound by borders.

It's one of the reasons the Balkanization post Snowden post RU hack is interesting. It may reverse the direction.
