I bought a used key for a Prius that had a working key. The guy turned the car on and pulled the data from it.

they're programmable devices. They can put an expiration time on them. If its for a car, not sure why they would do that. An apartment could have the lease duration on it.

Not sure. But VW charged me 250 for a new one with programming. And that's a relative deal apparently.
