It’s not exculpatory of Wikileaks who clearly is acting to undermine election by sowing dissension as well as tilt the results. Far from their supposedly pure purpose.
Yeah. Particularly on this matter, that's true. But even within that frame, it's clear Assange was fighting his credibility problems.

There is no doubt in my mind that Assange is being paid by Russia.

He doesn't need to get paid. He's gotten rich off bitcoin. Plus, they probably dealt him the Vault 7/8 files which are more valuable than money.
