My expectation has always been that human driving will be legal for a long time, just expensive because insurance premiums will be huge.https://twitter.com/binarybits/status/930072637191213057 …

This is an interesting theory. Human driving might become de facto impossible without an explicit law making it so... pic.twitter.com/gHe38QTXtB

Which will lead to people driving illegally because the people who won't be able to afford a self-driving car won't afford the insurance.

I don't think this is right in the long run, tho. My instinct tells me self-driving cars will be way cheaper both to make & operate.

Also, most people won't own these cars. They'll summon one on their phone on-demand.

Which poor people also won't be able to afford.

I think this is backwards for 2 reasons. First, many of the poor are unbanked by can get mobiles w/cash. So w/ a mobile & cash, they'll be able to get a car on-demand.

Second, when it comes to complex hardware/software combos (i.e. cars, computers) it's generally cheaper to for most users to rent in small, granular time-slices on demand than own.

My instinct is that the economics of this will hold for on-demand autos & rides of short to medium duration. You also get economies of scale (i.e. smart routing & multiple pickups will yield gas savings per passenger).

All of what I've said above is assuming there is actual competition in the long term, and that a winning cartel or monopolist doesn't just set transportation prices for everyone. That assumption may be optimistic :(

Way optimistic, I think. But at least Uber will face an uphill climb.

Yeah, a market winner will also likely use perfectly legal algo-driven redlining to ensure that poor people go nowhere.

Ok, so maybe I should revise the OP to say that self-driving will be way cheaper than human driving /for me and people like me/, and will open up new vistas of inequality for many others :(
